Teaching Statement
First and foremost : my approach to teaching reflects the musical passion I've always had ; I believe that the love of music is something to be shared and passed on, at any level of knowledge. Secondly : musical values learned as a professional often exist outside of the world of pure technique ; my teaching would similarly reflect that - it's about the music ! Thirdly : prospective students will be able to draw from my principal strength as a drummer, which is the ability to play different styles equally well - jazz, R'n'B, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music, and pop. So in this way any teaching approach can be nuanced towards a student's specific interests.
Education
I am essentially self-taught ; most of my skills were developed onstage. This real-life experience has given me a particular advantage in coaching musicians, professional as well as amateur. I've studied more formally as well : for a few months at The Drummer's Collective in New York, principally with jazz drummer Mike Clarke of Herbie Hancock fame. Other teachers along the way include Frank Malabe (latin rhythms applied to drum-kit), Johnny Almendra (timbales), and Portinho (Brazilian rhythms). Although I can read music, I prefer to play by ear. I am equally at home teaching a beginner, a hobby drummer, or a sophisticated professional.
Biography
I have had a long, successful and distinguished career as a professional drummer, and have recently decided to share my experience and knowledge, through teaching. Although I have a reputation as a jazz drummer, my career trajectory has taken me through the musical worlds of pop, R'n'B, jazz, Brasilian and Afro-Cuban music, Broadway shows and studio work - all of which I enjoy playing. Along the way I've been blessed with the good fortune of working with some great musicians and artists, and am myself an award-winning artist, including a JUNO Award.
Studio Policies
Due to apartment noise considerations, I use an electronic drum-kit at my home studio. If this is an issue, I have no problem with teaching at a student's home or studio.
