Teaching Statement
Alex believes that the student should have a say in what elements they want to learn. This is the basis of his teaching philosophy: the teacher is the employee of the student. The student has hired the teacher to impart on them what elements of music they want to know, and make them satisfied with both the process of learning and the outcome. This means empowering the student to achieve their goals according to their own definition of success, and maximizing the aspects of music available for the student to choose from. Alex’s mission in being a music teacher is to make music accessible to all those that are interested, to make it ‘open source’ and give his students the ability to do what they want with music, not the other way around.
Education
Bachelor of Arts (Music) Majoring in Jazz Guitar from Laurentian University.
Biography
Alex believes in teaching what the student wants to learn and empowering them to achieve their musical goals.
Alex has returned to Toronto after growing up in Northern Ontario where he completed his B.A. in jazz guitar at Laurentian University. Alex went above and beyond the requirements of his studies, experiencing and gaining expertise in a wide variety of disciplines with an emphasis on teaching and pedagogy. He was already taking part in the Sudbury music scene when he got to university, which would see him take part in diverse performances in a variety of venues, from classical music in churches, to jazz in cafes and at festivals, to hip-hop in bars.
In addition to guitar he also became comparably proficient at bass and drums, having performed on all three in both the university’s ensembles, where he became the bandleader in his upper years, and his own bands where he also often took on a leadership role. However Alex is not just experienced in jazz, but has taken a special interest in contemporary music in all its iterations, including hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, blues, musical theatre and modern forms of classical music. He also has an in depth understanding of the music and its culture in terms of history, theory, composition, improvising, recording, instrument construction, forming and sustaining a band large or small, researching and critiquing, promoting…he can even teach you to be a teacher! He believes there is much more to music than just playing and would be happy to share any or all of these insights with you.
